In the spring of 2021, while much of America’s hospitality industry was still fighting to find its footing, Craig Menin was preparing to unveil one of the most ambitious culinary destinations in the country.

For Menin, it was another bold move in a career built on seeing potential early. The Delray Beach-based developer had acquired, developed and improved more than $1.5 billion in commercial real estate nationwide, with projects spanning South Florida and major markets across the country.

And he had been shaping Delray Beach long before its current renaissance.

Delray Beach Market had already been years in development, with construction beginning in November 2019. Then COVID hit.

Menin didn’t retreat.

While hospitality contracted around the country, construction continued on a staggering vision: four stories, 150,000 square feet, more than 25 culinary concepts, three bars, art, entertainment and gathering spaces—all rising just steps from Atlantic Avenue.

The idea was bigger than building Florida’s largest food hall. Menin and his team had studied what Delray Beach was missing and what visitors from across Florida and the country would come to experience. The Market was projected to welcome more than 2,000 visitors daily and help put Delray Beach on the national culinary map.

It was a $60 million statement about where Delray Beach was headed.

The culinary mix was equally ambitious, designed to pair emerging chefs with experienced operators spanning fast-casual to fine dining. Talent arrived with pedigrees stretching from New York and Hong Kong to Las Vegas—a glimpse of the caliber of hospitality increasingly finding its way to South Florida.

By April 2021, national media were paying attention. The Market debuted as Florida’s largest food hall and one of the largest in America.

Then came the launch.

More than 1,000 guests gathered for the red-carpet VIP preview hosted by Menin and officiated by House of Gab. The three-day opening moved from an exclusive media reveal and invitation-only celebration to a public grand opening and ribbon cutting with city and state officials.

It wasn’t simply another opening. It captured a turning point.

The original Delray Beach Market food-hall concept would eventually evolve. Today, the property remains a vibrant hospitality destination, now home to Bounce Delray and other concepts.

But in the spring of 2021, Delray Beach Market made its mark nationally—and helped usher in a new era of elevated hospitality for Delray Beach.
